It was inevitable in Belgium as well. The Belgian PM actually started his press conference with the sentence ‘it was a thing waiting to happen’.

So I was watching my local news tonight and they were listing all these monuments around the world that were lit up in the colors of the Belgian flag. They showed the Brandenburg gate, the Trevi Fountian, and the Eifel tower, but at the end they showed New York and said “the Freedom Tower is lit up in red, white, and blue!” and just ended the segment.
I'm still perplexed by that.

Well it would of confused the locals. “what’s with the red, yellow and black? Our flag is red, white and blue right? Oh okay, the colours of the Belgian flag. Where’s Belgian, sorry, Belgium. There! Hang on I thought that was Europe. So Belgium is a country in Europe. Okay, then what’s the capitol called? Ha, Brussels. You don’t get me that easily, brussels are an awful vegetable that cause smelly farts. Oh, you nearly had me there. Oh look that building is lit up in red, yellow and black! Our flag is red, white and blue right?”.

My wife was confused as to where it was located. She knew Brussels was the capital and one of the capitals of the EU, she generally knew it was in Western Europe and near France, but other than that she was clueless. Tried referencing off Germany/Luxembourg/Holland which didn’t help since in her mind she saw the German/French border as a single thing and was similarly unaware of LUX/NLD’s locations with specificity. Then I had a cartoon lightbulb moment and went and grabbed the Axis and Allies board.
AND failure. The Axis and Allies board has them all lumped with France as 'Western Europe'. Damnit...screw you Milton Bradley. We played that a ton in college and her understanding of European geography is apparently mostly based on that.

I do. I love our cousins across the pond. Only I just accept there are a lot (too many) of people who have little to no knowledge of countries outside their own.
